How to Prepare For a Move - Several Great Tips

Moving is not an easy process. It sounds relatively easy: pack your stuff, move it to a new location and unpack it. Unfortunately the process is often long, complicated and ends up in at least one or two flared tempers. Here are some tips on how to prepare for your move. After all, the more prepared you are, the easier it should be.

1. Eight weeks before the move start looking into moving companies. Get some estimates and check the references that the movers provide you.

2. Seven weeks before you move you should sort through all of your things and decide what to keep and what to get rid of. Write up a list of everything that you own that is making the move with you. This list becomes important, not just to make sure that you pack everything and that it all ends up where it should, but in case anything gets damaged or broken, you will know how much it will cost to replace. It is also handy for home insurance purposes.

3. Six weeks before you move start sorting through your stuff and organizing your information. Gather your medical, dental and other records together. Make sure to change your address on your magazine subscriptions and catalogues.

4. Five weeks before you move you should start gathering packing materials. If you have kids, you should register them in their new schools. If you have a pet, call your new town to find out what is required of pet owners and get your pet's vet records so that you can transfer them easily to a new veterinarian.

5. Four To Five Weeks before you move, start contacting moving companies about scheduling your move, change your address with the post office and schedule a transfer date with the utility companies.

6. Three weeks before you move make sure that all of your library books and other borrowed materials have been returned to the proper owners.

7. In the two weeks before you move start packing all of the items you don't use very often.

8. In the week before you move, pack your belongings and clean your house from top to bottom.
