You've completed high school, you've been doing well at university and have gotten a steady job. Now you're practically itching to move out of the home you grew up in. You love your family, but you feel like it's time to get out on your own. Before you jump into this new chapter in your life, taking some time to plan will keep some unwelcome surprises from creeping up on you.
The first thing that you need to do is make a budget. Ask your friends who have a similar income what they can reasonably afford to pay for rent every month, as well as food, utilities, transportation and miscellaneous costs such as clothing and entertainment.
You may be looking at your budget and thinking you may not be able to afford to move out quite yet, but there are some simple ways you can save money. Being able to save money in the areas you can cut back on will give you more money to work with in areas that you can't, or don't want to, cut back on.
A good example of this is learning to cook a few basic meals before you leave home so that you can cut back on eating out on a regular basis. If you've never cooked a meal in your life and you're having flashes of the fancy chefs on TV, just put that out of your mind. We're not talking about gourmet cooking here. We're talking about learning how to take raw food and turn it into cooked food. That's it. Ask your parents to show you how to do very basic things basic things like brown hamburger, sauté chicken breasts, or throw an occasional steak on a grill. Have them explain to you how to use some very basic seasonings, and give you some simple recipes. Learn how to cook rice, microwave potatoes and make a salad and you've got several meals to choose from any night of the week. The money you save by cooking for yourself most of the time will allow you to be able to go out and have dinner at a nice restaurant more often or spend the money in some other way than on the same old fast food six days a week.
You will also need some basic things for your apartment. Have your friends and family help you make a list of what you'll need. You'll probably end up getting a lot of what you need given to you. For the things that you don't get handed down to you, it's a good idea to begin purchasing what you'll need a few months ahead of time so that you don't have to spend a lot of money all at once. Keep an eye out for sales on the more expensive items you need, and you'll be able to stretch your money a lot further.
When it's all said and done, living on your own is about making choices and learning every week what works for you and what doesn't. Some weeks you may spend too much money in one area and will have no choice but to cut back in other areas. The next week, you'll have learned from that experience and will make better decisions in that area. Everyone starts out not quite knowing what to expect when they move out on their own. All you have to do is do your best to plan, learn from your mistakes and just keep going.
You'll be fine.
